- јуна 2021. године, Натфали Бенет постао је први премијер Израела који је религиозни циониста. Иако Бенетова политичка партија, Yamina, тренутно има само седам места у Кнесету (од 120), и иако он води веома климаву коалицију, његов избор на место премијера је симбол прогреса религиозних циониста према циљу успостављању хегемонистичке позиције у израелском друштву. Историјски, религијски ционизам је увек био мањински партнер у блоку који је одржавао хегемонију Радничког ционистичког покрета, у односу на ционистички пројекат насељавања. Међутим, израелско-арапски ратови из 1967. и 1973. године дали су младим генерацијама религиозних циониста шансу да преузму свој покрет и да се боре за, као они тврде, пребацивање са задњег седишта на возачко место израелског друштва. Губитак Радничког ционизма у вези са територијама које су освојене 1967. отворио је место за један такав потез. Религиозни ционисти имају велики опсег верских и националистичких погледа, али њихов најутицајнији и најдинамичнији елемент деловања јесте месијанистичка тенденција повезана са покретом Гуш Емуним. Суштинска вредност ове тенденције јесте укључење Западне обале под контролу Израела.
